Hotel Bathroom Cleaning SOP: Step-by-Step Housekeeping Standard
Bathroom defects create some of the strongest guest reactions in hotels. A single hair, water spot or odour can erase the impression of an otherwise well-presented room. The LuxOps Housekeeping Playbook treats bathroom cleaning as a fixed sequence: clean to dirty, top to bottom, dry to wet where possible, with final checks from the guest perspective.

Bathroom SOP: clean to dirty, top to bottom
This extract is adapted from the bathroom standards section of the room cleaning chapter. It gives attendants and supervisors the same sequence and inspection language.
Mirror first
Clean glass and mirrors with the dedicated cloth and check from several angles.
Vanity and chrome
Clean basin, counter, drain and faucet, then dry-polish to remove water spots.
Shower or bath
Remove soap residue, scale and hair from walls, fixtures, drain and floor.
Toilet last
Exterior, seat, underside, bowl, under-rim, base and behind toilet are cleaned last.
Final rule
No hair anywhere. Floor dry, amenities aligned, scent fresh and neutral.
Prepare the bathroom before applying products
Before cleaning starts, remove used towels, bath mat, glasses, open amenities and visible waste. Check for guest belongings and stop immediately if anything is found in a departure room. Ventilation and lighting should be turned on so residue and water spots are visible.
Follow the clean-to-dirty sequence
The standard order protects hygiene and avoids cross-contamination. Use the correct colour-coded microfibre for each surface. Toilet cloths and toilet-area tools must never touch mirrors, basin, amenities or general surfaces.
1. Mirror and glass
Clean mirrors and glass first using the dedicated glass cloth. Check from several angles because streaks often appear only from the guest’s viewing position.
2. Vanity, basin and chrome
Clean the counter, basin, overflow, drain, faucet and handles. Dry-polish chrome so there are no water spots around the tap or splashback.
3. Shower or bath
Clean walls, tiles, grout, door, curtain, tub, drain, fixtures and showerhead. Remove soap residue and scale before final polishing.
4. Toilet last
Clean exterior surfaces first, then seat and underside, then bowl and under-rim. Finish around the base and behind the toilet, where defects are often missed.
Finish with floor, amenities and scent
The floor should be cleaned from the farthest point toward the door and left completely dry. Amenities must be complete, aligned, labels forward and packaging intact. The final scent should be fresh and neutral, never chemical or damp.
Supervisor inspection points
A bathroom can look clean from the doorway and still fail inspection. Supervisors should check behind the toilet, floor corners, shower drain, mirror angles, chrome, grout, towel folds, glassware and amenity placement.
A hotel bathroom cleaning SOP succeeds when the sequence is always the same. The Room Attendant knows what to clean, in what order and to what standard; the supervisor knows exactly what to verify before release.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct order for cleaning a hotel bathroom?
The LuxOps sequence is mirror and glass, vanity and basin, shower or bath, toilet, floor, amenities and final inspection. The logic is clean to dirty and top to bottom.
What is the most common bathroom inspection failure?
Hair is the most visible and least tolerated defect. Supervisors should check corners, behind the toilet, shower drain, bath mat area and floor edges.
