Hotel Room Attendant Checklist: Daily SOP for Departure Rooms and Stayovers

A room attendant checklist is useful only if it follows the real rhythm of the floor. It should start before the room is opened, with trolley setup and assignment review, then guide the attendant through room entry, departure room cleaning, stayover service, bathroom standards, Lost & Found, DND and final self-inspection. Room attendant checklist: the LuxOps daily sequence

Departure room

What a Room Attendant Checklist Should Actually Control

A room attendant checklist should control three things: the sequence of work, the standard of finish and the handover to the supervisor. If it only lists items to clean, it misses the operational point. The checklist must help the attendant complete the room consistently and help the supervisor inspect it against the same standard.

Before the room

Review the assignment sheet, room status, VIP notes, special requests, early arrivals and maintenance alerts. A room attendant should not discover a VIP setup, connecting room or priority arrival only after entering the room.

During the room

Follow the same physical sequence every time. For departure rooms, the LuxOps playbook uses seven phases: initial assessment, bathroom deep clean, bedroom cleaning, bed making, closet and storage, minibar and beverage area, final presentation.

Before leaving

Complete a self-inspection from the guest perspective. The attendant can mark the room Clean, but the room is not ready for sale until a supervisor marks it Inspected after physical verification.

Pre-Shift Trolley Setup

The housekeeping trolley is the room attendant’s mobile workstation. A poorly stocked trolley creates return trips, delays and shortcuts. The checklist should define the par level and layout before the first room is started.

Linen, amenities and chemicals

Stock linen by room type, prepare complete towel sets, fill toiletries, tissues, toilet paper, laundry bags and stationery, then verify all cleaning products before going to the floor.

Color-coded microfiber

Use a color-coded system: blue for glass and chrome, yellow for general surfaces, green for bathroom surfaces and red for toilet areas. This prevents cross-contamination and makes training clearer.

Departure Room Cleaning: The 7-Phase SOP

A departure room is the most complete room attendant task because the room must feel untouched for the next guest. The LuxOps target is 45 to 60 minutes for a standard departure room, with quality never sacrificed for speed.

Phase 1: initial assessment

Open curtains and lights, scan for guest belongings, damage, odor, heavy mess or maintenance issues. If a guest item is found, stop and follow Lost & Found immediately. Never assume an item is trash.

Phase 2: bathroom deep clean

Work clean to dirty, top to bottom and dry to wet. Mirrors, vanity, sink, shower or bath, toilet and floor are cleaned in a fixed order. The bathroom must pass the no-hair-anywhere rule.

Phases 3 to 7: room finish

Dust high to low, make the bed with a crisp symmetrical finish, check closet and safe, restock minibar and beverage items, align stationery and finish with a final doorway view.

Stayover Service Checklist

Stayover service is not a lighter version of departure cleaning. It is a different procedure because the guest still owns the room. The goal is to refresh the space without disturbing personal belongings or preferences.

Respect guest belongings

Tidy without relocating. Pair shoes, straighten desk items, close books with a bookmark if available, but do not reorganize the guest’s belongings into a different system.

Linen and towel decisions

Maintain bed linen unless soiled, requested or scheduled for change. Towels on the floor are replaced; towels hung on the rack are normally reused under the environmental program.

DND, Lost & Found and Final Self-Inspection

The final part of the checklist protects privacy, security and room release quality. These are the steps that separate a professional housekeeping SOP from a simple cleaning list.

DND rule

If Do Not Disturb is displayed, do not knock and do not enter. Note the room, attempt contact at the property-defined time and document the result.

Lost & Found rule

Do not move an item until its exact location, room number and condition are recorded. Valuables, documents, medication and perishable items need different storage and return rules.

Final self-inspection

Stand at the door and view the room like the next guest: bed smooth, bathroom dry, no hair, no dust, amenities aligned, neutral scent and no unreported maintenance fault.

A strong room attendant checklist makes quality repeatable. It gives the attendant a fixed sequence, protects guest belongings, reduces missed details and gives the supervisor a clear basis for inspection.
